Week 2 Highlights 2022

Welcome to week two highlights of our songwriting contest highlights.  Again we are super impressed with the talent in the contest and love to share a peek behind the curtains.  Left to right clockwise from the top:

1) Ranchera Falaz by Javier Jara

Javier is also a finalist in the Kerrville New Folk for 2022, and while we're not fluent in Spanish this is a wonderful song that Javier describes as:

In Spanish, the song is a play on words, but in English the playfulness of the lyrics isn't as clear. For example vino in Spanish means both wine and came. Decanto is to decant and canto is "I sing."

RANCHERA FALAZ (4/4: 74bpm)

La melodía del día decanto,

como aquel vino que vino a alegrar

mi corazón con razón late tanto,

Y en mi falsete, se te ancla mi mar.

El universo es un verso inconforme,

en un instante distante y azul.

Voy transitando, citando tu nombre,

Ranchera Falaz

The melody of the day I decant

Like this wine that came to bring happiness

That’s why my heart beats so much

And in my falsete, you are anchored to my sea.

The universe is a verse dissatisfied,

In one instant distant and blue

I go traveling, citing your name

And when I’m rational, I remember your light.

I would like to offer you my love

With this fallacious ranchera!

What does it matter if the world is pain,

If together we leave its surface!

And of your life, share with me a little,

Because of mine, you used to savor its honey

Now, I say goodbye epidemic and crazy

Because this world truly is a bitter place.

2) You Can Have Wichita - James Tristan Redding.

A very nice country sounding story, while it's a co-write James confidently tells us he's mostly the author of it.  He is part of a very interest songwriter group, Song a Week

3) Disappear - Ron Selfridge

A deep song about an abusive relationship.

4) Those Suicide Doors - Carl Solomon

This post made us young folk google what a suicide door was, and if you don't know READ THIS.

We hope you enjoyed a taste of the submission.  Contest runs all of May; rules and submission link is HERE https://greatriverfolkfest.org/Songwriting.html
