Week 5 Highlights 2022

We sensed the momentum and did an early Week 4 Highlight, plus added a Memorial Day post.  We still have a dozen songs and only one repeat artist in our weekly and LAST Highlight post.  Oh my such good songs, and wonderful musicians that have put their names in the hat.  While you can read into the fact if they have been highlighted they have a great opportunity to reach our 12 finalist stage and be judged by a second round of judges.  We're thankful for our first round judges of Ryan, Nick, and Dave for listening to 7 hours of music over the month.  They are in the process of finishing and friendly arguing over who will make the finals round.

1) I Like Boats - Marty Kohn

Marty might like boats, but we love his word play in this song.

2) The Good Time Station - Mike Gruber

Let Mike take you to the good time station, will bring satisfaction to your soul.  Make you likely move in your chair too.

3) Better Things - Matt Monsoor

One of the many better things in life is playing music in a setting that Matt picked, and yes you can hear a few birds in the background.

4) Banjo in my Backseat - Jim Nelson

Jim brings an old joke to lyrics, hey will an accordion song be on his list next?  Great picking too in this gem.

5) Devil That I Know - Stone & Snow

This is an artist that we know from our previous contest finalist.  Karen and Clint are at their finest in this video, can harken back to The Civil Wars sound.  Again another beautiful setting outside.

6) Buy More Shoes - Brenna Larson

Ha... my wife approves of this message.  Well done fun blues piece.

7) A Lullaby for the NRA - Emily Johnson-Erday

Emily's second video highlighted, this one was written after the tragedy in Texas.

8) We Walk the Flats - Erin Ash Sullivan

Erin has an impressive list of experience, we are the lucky ones to have her submit a couple songs.

9) Skywriter - Andy Baker

Yes this video was made at our friends the Kerrville Folk Fest and Andy was a finalist in the New Folk Competition.  We love how he presents the inspiration to his song about skywriting.

10) The Songwriter Motel - Stuart Stotts

Stuart told us to jump ahead to 2:10 to skip the introduction, but DON'T... fun to hear the process and love that Peter Berryman helped with the song.

11) Coffee Colored Floors - Josh Ammann

Great song, even better acoustical idea to get into a minivan to record. I bet inside the house was too noisy.  Josh looked familiar and we found in a great local band, Knee-High July

12) Careful Darlin' - Mary Clare Stroh

Fitting we close out our highlights with a song that came in the last day of submissions from this Twin Cities musician.  Careful judges, choose wisely, maybe slip into a groove like this song.

We highly suggest you play judge and watch at least all of our highlights in this helpful YouTube playlist
